About the course
Successful graduates of the Northland Polytechnic Certificate in Super Yacht Crewing (level 4) programme will be expected to be able to demonstrate the knowledge, skills and attitudes required to secure a position as a professional crew person, onboard either commercial or private super yacht or ship, and will be able to : Demonstrate basic seamanship skills including: - stowage and handling of ropes; use of knots and lashings on a vessel; how to care for, stow, and undertake basic maintenance on sails; familiarity with equipment, fittings and operational areas of a vessel; operating a recreational craft by day; responding to emergencies and distress; retrieving a person overboard; yacht and power boat handling and operation. Operate and monitor vessels engines and auxiliary equipment and perform basic Inboard and outboard engine maintenance; Work safely in and around helicopters; Demonstrate safe use of firearms; Operate a marine radio; Operate radar in a marine environment; Demonstrate basic knowledge and skills in host responsibilities and stewardship; Demonstrate the knowledge and skills and attitudes commensurate with the Standards of Training and Certification of Watchkeepers 1995 (STCW95) including: fire prevention and fire fighting; personal Safety and social responsibilities; first aid; personal survival techniques.
Entry requirements
Students must be 16 years of age or older at the time of enrolment, unless approved otherwise by the Programme Manager An entry requirement is that each student can reasonably expect to achieve the standards required for successful completion of the programme or course.
