About the course
This qualification is for people who drive a 4WD motor vehicle in a business related environment, and/or for recreational use. The qualification recognises that the holder has knowledge and skills for safe and competent driving of 4WD motor vehicles.
The qualification has a simple format, and focuses on the knowledge and skills required of a person driving a 4WD motor vehicle safely. It comprises compulsory standards designed to assess a range of skills including knowledge and skills in operating a 4WD vehicle in both an on-road and an off-road environment, risk management and hazard detection.
Credit for elective standards in the qualification shows the holder of this qualification is able to demonstrate further specialised knowledge and driving skills related to pre-drive vehicle checks; 4WD excursions; risk management; emergency response actions; occupational health and safety; and driving, technical or generic skills related to their employment. While the driver of a 4WD vehicle usually requires a Class 1 driver licence, a 4WD vehicle may become a vehicle for which a Class 2 licence is required depending on the configuration and loading.
This qualification has some standards in common with the National Certificate in Driving (Light Motor Vehicle) [Ref: 0796].
