About the course

The graduate (under the direction and delegation of a Registered Nurse) will: 1. Safely apply knowledge and skills to deliver patient/client care across a range of health care settings 2. Competently assess health status and perform, appropriate interventions in a manner that supports best health outcomes for clients 3. Establish, maintain and conclude therapeutic relationships 4. Work collaboratively and communicate in oral, written and electronic media relevant to the interdisciplinary health care team 5. Apply professional judgment, accountability and responsibility in ensuring that nursing practice and conduct meets professional, ethical and legal requirements and standards 6. Practise in a manner that is culturally safe and promotes health, autonomy, self determination and quality of life 7. Be responsible for own ongoing professional development to maintain competence.

Entry requirements

All applicants must be at least 16 years of age on the date of the programme's commencement for the semester in which they wish to enrol (or provide a completed Early Release Exemption form, which can be obtained from a Ministry of Education office). To be admitted to the qualification of Diploma applicants must meet Unitec's English language entry requirements (see 2.5) AND Meet admission requirements under one of the following provisions a. General Admission OR b. Special Admission OR c. Discretionary Admission General Admission Applicants must: for a Level 5 Diploma have a total of 48 NCEA credits in his/her best four subjects at Level 2, or have gained a maximum total of 20 in his/her best 4 Sixth Form Certificate subjects, or equivalent, OR have completed an appropriate qualification at Level 3 or above. Special Admission Applicants must have: a. Attained the age of 20 years on or before the first day of the semester in which study for the Diploma is to commence; AND b. Have provided sufficient evidence of aptitude or appropriate work or other life experience that would indicate a successful outcome in the qualification. Discretionary Admission In exceptional cases an applicant who does not meet the general admission requirements and who has not reached the age of 20 on or before the first day of the semester in which study for the Diploma is to commence may apply for discretionary admission. In assessing whether to grant discretionary admission in exceptional cases, the primary focus will be on the applicant's level of preparedness for study at the required level. English Language Requirements Applicants must have achieved a minimum standard of English demonstrated by one of the following: a. Successful study at Levels 5 - 6 in English medium, b. A minimum of 12 credits at NCEA Level 1 in English, c. A minimum of a C grade of New Zealand School Certificate English, d. A minimum of 7 NCEA credits in English or History or Classics or Geography at Level 3, e. University Bursary in English or History or Classics or Geography, with a minimum mark of 40%, f. Evidence of achievement in English at a level equivalent to the above g. The Certificate in English (Academic) or equivalent (refer to Section 6 of the Admissions Requirements policy); h. An overall IELTS band score (Academic format) of no less than 6.0 (with no band score less than 5.0); i. A TOEFL score of no less than 550 or equivalent.
