National Certificate in Reo Maori (Level 4)
NZQF Level 4

About the course

This is the first qualification in a suite of three Reo Maori qualifications. The National Certificate in Reo Maori (Level 4) [Ref: 0426] is a certificate designed for people with some or very little knowledge in te reo Maori. It is designed to enable them to acquire and demonstrate capability in the knowledge and skills required for achievement in the domains Korero, Whakarongo, Tuhituhi and Panui.

The compulsory section recognises the ability to understand and use familiar expressions and everyday vocabulary to interact in a simple way in te reo Maori in supported situations.

The elective section allows candidates to select from a diverse range of outcomes from within the Reo Maori subfield. This flexibility allows the qualification to be focused on the specific needs of the individual.

People awarded this qualification are able to use te reo Maori appropriately in a variety of settings. They are able to communicate with their target audience in te reo Maori and are able to use language and sentence structures appropriately. Skills gained in this qualification will be beneficial for people interested in working in relevant areas of the education, business and public sectors, the community, and the Maori arena.

This qualification may provide a pathway to the National Certificate in Maori (Te Waharoa) (Level 2) [Ref: 0878] and to other qualifications on the New Zealand Qualifications Framework (NZQF) such as the National Diploma in Reo Maori (Level 5) [Ref: 1196] and the National Diploma in Reo Maori (Level 6) [Ref: 0722].

The qualification may also provide a sound basis from which to pursue further academic study and/or workplace training; leading to qualifications such as the National Certificate in Reo Maori Media (Introductory Media Skills) [Ref: 1024] and the National Certificate in Maori Performing Arts (Performance) (Level 4) [Ref: 0701]. Other NZQF qualifications that may be of interest to the candidate include the National Certificate in Tourism Maori (Level 4) [Ref: 1077] and the National Diploma in Tourism Maori (Level 5) [Ref: 1096].
