About the course

Take your practice to the next level by developing the bicultural skills needed to supervise, and support your staff and peers. This qualification is for those who want to gain a postgraduate diploma in professional supervision that has a unique point of difference in that it uses mātauranga Māori approaches as the core of its supervision curriculum in a range of different disciplines. 

Graduates of this programme will have the knowledge, practice, skills and attributes to make a positive difference as kaitiaki/supervisors by effectively working alongside whānau, hapū, iwi and communities.

You’ll learn about:

  • Kaitiakitanga and its purpose and obligations within practice contexts and industry
  • the practice of Kaitiakitanga / professional supervision informed by Māori and non-Māori worldviews
  • the contextualisation of Kaitiakitanga within the practice of professional bicultural supervision to a practice context
  • developing your own model of Kaitiakitanga practice and integrating this into your professional context
  • addressing the need for confident, competent, conscious practitioners in a range of different disciplines.

Entry requirements

To enrol in this programme, a potential student must:

  • be a New Zealand citizen (or citizen of Australia, Tokelau, Niue, Cook Islands) or permanent resident 
  • hold a relevant undergraduate degree and two years' relevant professional practice 
  • provide supportive references from two appropriate people within the professional practice discipline and/or provide two kaitiaki letters of support from hapū, iwi, or community groups

Candidates who have not gained a relevant undergraduate degree or equivalent qualification may submit evidence of current professional practice and/or kaitiaki practice in a portfolio, as well as:

  • participate in a professional conversation to assess their suitability to enter the qualification 
  • provide evidence of at least five years relevant professional practice.
