About the course
This qualification is for people working in the boatbuilding sector of the marine industry and is aimed primarily at people who want to gain an industry-developed and recognised qualification. It has been designed to recognise the knowledge and skills, and to formally acknowledge the status, of skilled tradespeople in the filling and fairing marine substrates and marine painting sectors of the marine industry.
This qualification includes a core set of compulsory standards. The core compulsory section recognises generic boatbuilding knowledge and skills, health and safety, and knowledge of the distribution environment and the New Zealand marine industry.
The three strands allow people to choose standards that reflect the area of specialisation that best suits their employment needs or their own interests.
The Fill and Fair Marine Substrates strand is designed for people who specialise in the filling and fairing of boat substrates in preparation for the painting of boat surfaces. It is made up of a compulsory and elective section. The compulsory section includes standards that describe the knowledge and skills required for filling and fairing. The elective section allows people to select a standard relevant to the specific requirements of their workplace or their own interests. People who have gained the qualification with this strand will be industry-qualified as marine substrate fillers and fairers.
The Interior Marine Painting strand is designed for people who specialise in the interior painting of boats, and the Exterior Marine Painting strand is designed for people who specialise in the exterior painting of boats. Both strands include a compulsory section which includes standards that describe the knowledge and skills required of a marine painter. People who have gained the qualification with one of these strands will be industry-qualified as either an interior or exterior marine painter.
This qualification shares standards in common with, and may lead to, the National Certificate in Boatbuilding (Level 4) with the Interior and Exterior Marine Painting strand [Ref: 0877].
