About the course

This qualification is designed for people entering the industry either as an apprentice or a new employee. Components of this qualification can be used with Gateway programmes for schools.

The purpose of the National Certificate in Furniture (Level 2) with strands in Introductory Furniture Finishing Skills, Introductory Furniture Making Skills, and Introductory Upholstery Skills is to ensure that all employees in the furniture industry are familiar with the furniture operations they are working in and can perform duties responsibly, safely and efficiently.

The core compulsory contains two standards: one relating to workplace health and safety; and a second, to planning a career pathway in the furniture manufacturing industry. The core elective offers a range of standards relating to generic workplace skills and knowledge, including first aid, health and safety. Each of the three strands is aligned with introductory skills in an individual operations domain within furniture manufacturing; and each contains relevant electives.

This qualification can lead on to the National Certificate in Furniture (Level 3) with strands in Finishing, Machine Operator, Free Standing Furniture, Frame Making, Upholstery, Upholstery Cutting, and Upholstery Sewing [Ref: 1503].
