Course details

National Certificate in Outdoor Recreation (River Guide) with optional strands in Senior Raft Guide, and Senior Whitewater Craft Guide
NZQF Level 4

About the course

This National Certificate is for people working in the Outdoor Recreation industry who wish to guide commercial raft or craft trips on New Zealand whitewater rivers. It is a standalone qualification designed to meet the Maritime New Zealand (MNZ) qualification and licensing requirements (awards) for guiding clients on New Zealand rivers in rafting and white water boarding activities.

The qualification also includes the broad transferable and generic skills of risk management, planning, communications, and customer service.

The Core Compulsory section of this qualification covers the skills and knowledge required to plan and prepare for commercial river trips, guide clients through an adventure tourism activity of less than one day, and apply river rescue skills on Grade III or above whitewater rivers; while the Core Elective section offers the flexibility of recognising the specific craft and river grades in which the award will be applied.

While both Optional Strands cover coordinating and managing multiple craft trips, the Senior Raft Guide Optional Strand includes a standard that covers applying serious incident management skills as a senior guide on Grade III or above river environments; whereas the Senior Whitewater Craft Guide Optional Strand covers the application of serious incident management skills as a whitewater craft senior guide on Grade III/IV river environments.

The MNZ qualification requirements represented in the National Certificate are summarised in the table below. More detail for Rafting activities can be found in Rule Part 80 available on the Maritime Safety Authority website at: http://www.maritimenz.govt.nz.

More detail for white water boarding activities (Safety Guidelines, Commercial White Water Boarding Operations) available on the Maritime Safety Authority website at: http://www.maritimenz.govt.nz.

About the provider

Te Mahi Ako is a Private Training Enterprise (PTE) funded by the government to create world-class, nationally-recognised programmes linked to qualifications that staff can complete on the job. The benefit of on-the-job training is that you are earning an income, gaining a qualification, and getting real-life experience, all in one go. And because Te Mahi Ako’s programmes are government-subsidised, they are very affordable.

Te Mahi Ako works with a wide range of facilities throughout New Zealand, from small to large. Te Mahi Ako or the facility will provide learning resources and assessment tasks for the staff member, and supporting materials will help the workplace to deliver the training. In some cases, an organisation’s own in-house training programme will be aligned to a Te Mahi Ako programme, so staff members who complete the in-house training will simultaneously earn a national qualification. Te Mahi Ako also has a Recognition of Current Competency process, which means that you may be able to get your existing skills and experience recognised through a qualification.

To enrol in a Te Mahi Ako on-the-job qualification, you must be employed in the industry or be a volunteer. Make sure to check with the business that you’re working in, or would like to work in, to see if they are already registered with Te Mahi Ako.
