About the course

This is the basic qualification for people wishing to pursue a career in the electronic security industry. It has been specifically designed for installers of electronic security systems, such as intruder alarms, closed circuit television, access control, and intercom systems and those trainees who do not need to perform prescribed electrical work. This qualification is also relevant for qualified electricians intending to work in the electronic security installation field.

This qualification comprises one compulsory section that covers the main electronic security systems to ensure that technicians have well rounded skills and knowledge to meet the industry's requirements to competently install electronic security systems.

Typically, this qualification may be gained during the course of a two to three-year traineeship, incorporating learning in the workplace and off-job.

The qualification covers:
. Practical installation of access control systems, closed circuit television systems (CCTV), intercom systems, and intruder alarm systems.
. Electronic security legislation, codes of practice, and standards.
. Electronic security system devices.
. Electronic security installation requirements and procedures.
. Electronic security cable support systems and cables.
. Electronic security data protocols and cabling.
. External communication concepts relevant to electronic security services.

The qualification also covers some broad transferable skills and knowledge that can be used in other industries. These include report writing, customer service, and communication, as well as some electrical and electronic engineering knowledge and skills.

Holders of this certificate may progress to the National Certificate in Electronic Security (Level 4) [Ref: 0788], which is for technicians; and recognises the skills required for designing, installing, commissioning, and maintaining more complex security systems, and supervision within the electronic security industry.

This qualification can build on the National Certificate in Electrical Engineering (Level 2) [Ref: 0174], which contains the six standards that are recommended as pre-learning for trainees entering into study for this qualification. Please refer to Special Note 1 following.
