About the course
The Graduate Diploma in Addiction, Alcohol and Drug Studies is a unique graduate programme designed to meet the needs of graduates with related qualifications and work experience, for knowledge and understanding of addictive behaviour, alcohol and drug issues and problems, and approaches to practice in the addiction services field. This is a non-clinical programme and therefore is not practice based. It will however equip graduates with knowledge and skills relating to addiction, alcohol and drugservices. The programme aims to attract students who want to increase their knowledge base, in ways that will enhance their professional practice where addictions, especially alcohol and drug problems are an issue for the people they work with. The programme introduces students to the scope of addiction, alcohol and drug services; assessment and intervention strategies for clients with addiction and co-existing mental health disorders; gambling and other impulse control disorders; and the impact of forms of abuse. It provides knowledge of the ethics, theories and principles that underpin the work of addiction, alcohol and drug practitioners.
The programme is consistent with the principles and core values of the professional body the Addiction Practitioners' Association of Aotearoa New Zealand (DAPAANZ).
Entry requirements
Academic: A Bachelor degree in health or social services field; or equivalent personal, practical, professional or educational experience of an appropriate kind, and at the appropriate level. This qualification is not open to graduates of WelTec's Bachelor of Addiction Studies. English Language: IELTS (Academic) 6.5 with no less than 6.0 in reading and writing or achieved the academic entry requirement in New Zealand or achieved the academic entry requirement at an institution where English was the language of instruction and assessment. Other: Basic computing ability with knowledge of Microsoft Office packages or similar software. Applicants may be required to attend an interview.
