About the course
The purpose of this qualification is to provide industry with shotfirers who have the knowledge and skills to carry out blasting for Land Operations, Surface (Quarry or Open-cast), Underground (Tunnelling or Metalliferous), Underground Coal, or Construction. Construction blasting excludes building demolition by way of explosion or implosion techniques.
Graduates will have the skills, knowledge and experience required when applying for an Approved Handler's Test Certificate for their particular blasting strand, as set out in the Hazardous Substances and New Organisms (Personnel Qualifications) Regulations 2001 (Regulation 5). Note however that further regulatory licensing is also required to possess certain explosives. Specific details are available from the Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) at www.epa.govt.nz.
