About the course

Successful students should be able to: * Recognise the need to extend and transfer prior skills within English speaking contexts. * Apply knowledge of high frequency words and multi-word units in the second thousand most frequent English words and other appropriate level frequency lists, as well as personal interest words, to the generation of original utterances and written texts. * Access, retrieve and understand information from spoken and written texts from a range of sources. * Employ linguistic devices to organise information in written and spoken form. * Structure interactions according to the sociolinguistic conventions of the English speaking environment. * Make use of feedback processes to identify gaps in knowledge and to self-correct their use of English. * Identify possible causes of communication problems and employ relevant strategies to overcome these problems. * Display effective skills in making appropriate grammatical and lexical choices to convey intended meaning in rehearsed and unrehearsed contexts. * Apply word processing, lexico-syntactic, discourse and process writing knowledge to produce and edit original documents. * Work independently using self-access materials to suit their individual learning styles.
