About the course

You will learn how to:

  • Design, adapt and deliver safe and effective exercise programmes and group exercise classes, including choreography for varying abilities, for individuals and groups across the general population and common at-risk groups.
  • Apply knowledge of anatomy and physiology to inform safe and effective movement and exercise programming in both individual and group exercise contexts.
  • Apply communication, connection and culturally appropriate practice to support participant engagement, commitment, and the development of participants' own health and wellbeing knowledge and skills.
  • Apply a health and wellness framework, including evidence-based nutrition principles, to support participant health and wellbeing and identify appropriate referral pathways to allied health professionals.
  • Use business tools, techniques and practices to operate effectively as an exercise professional and develop and maintain a client base.

Programme Specific Information

All domestic applicants under the age of 20:

  • NCEA Level 1, or
  • Equivalent educational achievement, or
  • Special Admission.

Applicants who do not meet the academic requirements may be given special admission if they can provide evidence that they can achieve the programme outcomes. Special admission may also apply for applicants over 20 years.

Education Pathway

This qualification provides a pathway to, and is a prerequisite for, the New Zealand Certificate in Exercise (Level 5) [Ref: 3564].

Employment/Cultural/Community Pathway

Graduates can be employed or self-employed in roles such as exercise consultant, community exercise instructor, team training instructor or personal trainer, freestyle group exercise instructor, community exercise instructor, group or small team training instructor.
