New Zealand Certificate in English Language Level 4 (General)

New Zealand Certificate in English Language Level 4 (General) is designed for learners who have a strong foundation in English and are ready to communicate with a high level of independence and confidence. The programme welcomes both domestic and international learners, including Māori, Pacific, migrant, and former refugee learners.

You will further develop your skills in reading, writing, listening, and speaking, with a focus on understanding, analysing, and expressing ideas and viewpoints across a wide range of contexts. These include social, community, learning, and employment-related situations.

At this level, you will engage with extended spoken and written texts, including more complex and less predictable content, and learn to respond thoughtfully to different perspectives. This helps you communicate effectively in real-life situations and adapt your language to suit different purposes and audiences.

The programme supports a high level of learner independence, with self-directed learning that encourages you to apply your skills in new and less familiar contexts beyond the classroom.

By the end of the programme, you will be well prepared to use English confidently in your community, workplace, or further study.

The programme is open to learners of English as an additional language who have achieved the New Zealand Certificate in English Language (Level 3 General, Applied or Academic) or who can demonstrate equivalent English language proficiency.

Equivalent proficiency may be evidenced through recognised English language tests (e.g. IELTS, CEFR-aligned assessments) or through placement testing conducted by the provider.

Learners are expected to have the language skills required to participate independently in reasonably familiar contexts and to comprehend and produce connected spoken and written texts consistent with Level 3 expectations.

Entry is subject to placement processes to ensure learners are able to meet the language and learning demands of Level 4 study.
