New Zealand Certificate in English Language (Applied) Level 3
NZQF Level 3

About the course

New Zealand Certificate in English Language Level 3 (Applied) is designed for learners who are ready to use English more independently in practical, real-life situations. The programme welcomes both domestic and international learners, including Māori, Pacific, migrant, and former refugee learners.

You will develop your skills in reading, writing, listening, and speaking, with a focus on using English in workplace-related, community, and training contexts. You will learn to understand and respond to information, instructions, and ideas in everyday situations that reflect entry-level employment and vocational learning environments.

At this level, you will work with practical, purpose-driven texts and tasks, helping you build the communication skills needed for real-world interactions. This includes taking part in conversations, following instructions, and completing simple tasks commonly found in workplaces and training settings.

The programme also supports you to become a more independent learner, with structured self-study that helps you practise, consolidate, and extend your skills beyond the classroom.

By the end of the programme, you will feel more confident using English in applied settings and be better prepared for further training, study, or entry-level employment.

Entry requirements

The programme is open to learners of English as an additional language who have achieved the New Zealand Certificate in English Language (Level 2), the New Zealand Certificate in English Language (Level 3 General), or who can demonstrate equivalent English language proficiency.

Equivalent proficiency may be evidenced through recognised English language tests (e.g. IELTS, CEFR-aligned assessments) or through placement testing conducted by the provider.

Learners are expected to have the language skills required to operate with increasing independence in familiar and reasonably familiar contexts and to engage with moderately complex texts in applied or workplace-adjacent situations.
