New Zealand Certificate in English Language Level 2
NZQF Level 2

About the course

New Zealand Certificate in English Language (Level 2) is designed for learners who have developed basic English skills and are ready to communicate with greater confidence and independence. The programme welcomes both domestic and international learners, including Māori, Pacific, migrant, and former refugee learners.

You will continue building your skills in reading, writing, listening, and speaking, with a focus on understanding and sharing information, ideas, and opinions in everyday situations. You will learn to use English in short, connected conversations and texts across familiar contexts such as personal life, community, learning, and simple workplace-related situations.

Compared to Level 1, you will engage with a wider range of texts and interactions, helping you communicate more effectively in predictable, real-life environments. The programme also supports you to become a more independent learner, with guided self-study that reinforces and extends what you learn in class.

By the end of the programme, you will feel more confident using English to participate in your community, continue your studies, and prepare for future opportunities.

Entry requirements

The programme is open to learners of English as an additional language who:

have achieved the New Zealand Certificate in English Language (Level 1), or

can demonstrate equivalent English language proficiency appropriate to Level 2 study.

Equivalent proficiency may be evidenced through placement assessment conducted by the provider, prior English language study, or recognised English language tests where applicable.
