About the course
New Zealand Certificate in English Language (Level 1) is designed for learners who are beginning their English language journey and are developing basic communication skills. This programme welcomes both domestic and international learners, including Māori, Pacific, migrant, and former refugee learners.
You will build essential English skills in reading, writing, listening, and speaking to help you communicate in everyday situations. By the end of the programme, you will be able to understand and use simple English for familiar, real-life purposes, such as introducing yourself, asking for information, and engaging in short conversations in social and practical contexts.
The programme supports you to participate with increasing confidence and independence in English-speaking environments, helping you take the next step in your study, work, or community life.
Entry requirements
The programme is open to learners of English as an additional language who:
- have achieved the New Zealand Certificate in English Language (Foundation), or
- can demonstrate equivalent English language proficiency appropriate to Level 1 study.
Equivalent proficiency may be evidenced through placement assessment conducted by the provider, prior English language study, or recognised English language tests where applicable.
