About the course

The construction industry is in need of more skilled plumbers, gasfitters and drainlayers and there is plenty of well-paid work available in New Zealand and overseas.

Get the knowledge and hands-on skills you need to take on an apprenticeship in the industry.

You will develop basic skills in residential plumbing, gasfitting and drainlaying. You will be taught by lecturers who know their stuff. They are specialists in their field and eager to share their industry contacts with you.

As part of the course, you will visit plumbing businesses and suppliers of plumbing materials. These trips will help you keep pace with current plumbing supplies, installations and new technologies.

Please note: A small component of this programme is delivered by a sub-contractor.

You may be required to complete literacy and numeracy assessments as part of this programme.

Entry requirements

General

There is open entry to this programme although students must demonstrate a reasonable likelihood of success.

English language entry requirements

You will need English language competence to undertake this programme which is taught and assessed in English (an assessment may be required if your first language is not English).

Selection Criteria

  1. To meet legal and health requirements, candidates must be physically able to carry out the practical components of the programme.

  2. Where there are more candidates than places available in the programme, selection will be made on the basis of the following criteria:

  3. Whether candidates have completed three years of secondary education;

  1. Candidates’ academic achievement in NCEA Level 1 and/or NCEA Level 2, or Year 11 and/or Year 12 English and Mathematics; and

  2. Candidates’ demonstrated commitment to the industry.

It is important for learners to understand that if you intend to progress to a Plumbing, Drainlaying and/or Gasfitting apprenticeship programme, you will need to register with the Plumbers Gasfitters and Drainlayers Board. The Board will undertake a check with Police to see if the graduate has a criminal record and will then decide whether the graduate is a fit and proper person to be registered. If the graduate has a criminal record this might exclude them from registration.
