Programme highlights
Get the knowledge and skills to work as a skipper.
This programme is suitable if you would like to progress to the role of skipper on a restricted limits vessel and:
- Are working as deck crew or
- Have suitable experience as a skipper on a recreational vessel.
You will need to have access to a suitable vessel to complete the Maritime New Zealand (MNZ) approved Training Record Book (TRB).
You’ll learn the skills and knowledge required to safely plan a passage, and operate and maintain a vessel less than 24 metres in length within restricted limits.
This qualification leads to a Maritime New Zealand (MNZ) certificate. Expand for more detail. You need to complete this qualification before applying to Maritime New Zealand (MNZ) for your operating licence:
Award of the MNZ certificate of competency will also require the completion of:
- Sea service
- MNZ medical fitness certificate
- Eyesight test (including for colour vision)
- Fit and proper person check
- Final exam
- Ancillary certificates.
