About the course

This programme is designed for people with prior knowledge of hairstyling and colouring tasks and basic hair-cutting techniques, who wish to develop skills and knowledge to become a professional hairstylist. With a flexible three-day-a-week study schedule, you can pursue your creative ambitions without putting the rest of your life on hold – making it easier to balance study with work, family or other commitments.

You will graduate with the knowledge, skills, and attributes to provide integrated fashion services as a professional hairstylist and will have hands-on experience for real clients in an Auckland salon or in MIT’s very own salon, Hair at MIT.

Entry requirements

To be admitted to this programme, applicants must hold one of the following:

New Zealand Certificate in Hairdressing (Level 3); or an equivalent qualification.

International applicants:

International applicants are required to have an IELTS score of 5.5 (general or academic) with no individual band lower than 5 from one test taken in the preceding two years, or an equivalent described in NZQA Rules.

Special & discretionary admission

Any ākonga who is 20 years of age or older and has not reached the general admission requirements for their intended programme is eligible for Special Admission. MIT works with the ākonga to ensure they are prepared for their intended programme. Any ākonga who is not yet 20 years of age and has not reached the general admission requirements for their intended programme may be eligible for Discretionary Admission. In assessing whether to grant Discretionary Admission, the delegated authority focuses on the applicant’s level of preparedness for their intended programme.
