English for Work

About the course

Purpose

The English for Work (EFW) Programme has been developed with two semesters of 260 class hours (minimum) to:

• Prepare students to look for and start working in Aotearoa New Zealand with the language and digital skills,

and employment and cultural knowledge outlined in this curriculum.

• Provide students with the opportunity to achieve formal recognition of their skills in New Zealand assessed

against Unit Standards in line with criteria set by the New Zealand Qualifications Authority (NZQA).

EFW is designed to meet the needs of learners whether or not they wish to be assessed with NZQA Unit Standards

(note: only those who are assessed with NZQA Unit Standards are eligible for a KiwiClass Certificate of Completion).

Some learners may have significant gaps, learning needs, or personal circumstances which may be a barrier to gaining

the basic skills required to successfully complete the course and move into work. KiwiClass acknowledges these

challenges and provides the opportunity for students in these circumstances to repeat the programme as needed.

Outcomes and successful completion of the programme

Learners who successfully complete EFW should have the basic core skills and confidence to look for and gain

employment independently. Successfully completing EFW includes:

• Attending regularly and actively participating in classes and activities

• Achieving KiwiClass General EFW Assessments

• Achieving all Unit Standard assessments in this curriculum in line with the New Zealand Qualifications

Authority (NZQA) criteria.

Students will be eligible to achieve and receive the KiwiClass EFW Certificate of Achievement if:

• They are assessed as competent (a passing grade) for Unit Standards in line with NZQA performance criteria.

Students will be eligible to achieve and receive the KiwiClass EFW Certificate of Participation if:

• They attend at least 70% of their enrolled classes and have not yet achieved a Unit Standard, and

• Are assessed as competent in the learning outcomes for the following curriculum areas:

o Understand employment requirements

o Participate in spoken interactions in the workplace

o Read and write common workplace texts

o Apply numeracy skills in workplace tasks.

Note: NZQA Unit Standards may incorporate performance criteria for one or more components of the curriculum

areas where NZQA assessment conditions and performance criteria are not negatively impacted.

Entry requirements

Target group

This programme is for students at a beginner level learning English as an additional language and are needing English

language and/or cultural support to overcome barriers to look for and gain employment in Aotearoa New Zealand.

Students in this course will typically have achieved our General English 2B level or be assessed at 2B or above. We

assess students’ language levels prior to joining the class to ensure suitability for the course, considering various

language, social, and cultural support needs. The programme aims to support these students to:

• Gain confidence to communicate in the workplace and understand common workplace language

• Gain confidence to look for and apply for work

• Understand basic employment rights and responsibilities in relation to employment law

• Develop numeracy skills common to the workplace

• Potentially gain NZQA qualifications through Unit Standards
