About the course

Overview

The General English programme is designed to support those who have English as an additional

language to develop their English communication skills within the context of Aotearoa New Zealand.

Learning Outcomes

Each of the Learning outcomes are graded, based on the relevant class level.

• To increase confidence in communicating in English.

• To be able to speak on and understand topics related to resettlement in Aotearoa New

Zealand, including sharing personal information details and building social connections, and

accessing support agencies and recreational activities.

• To be able to identify and use high-frequency and high-interest words.

• To be able to follow and give spoken instructions in familiar contexts.

• To increase relevant social and commercial networks with others living in the Wellington area

• To be able to write key information using correct letter formation.

• To be able to read and write in English, short communications needed in everyday life and

low-skilled jobs.

• To use formal learning skills to increase own learning and move towards being autonomous.

• To understand and use basic numeracy literacy to participate in daily life in Aotearoa New

Zealand.

• To recognise, understand and use common Māori words found in Aotearoa New Zealand.

• To understand the place of the Treaty of Waitangi in Aotearoa New Zealand.
