NZQF Level 4

About the course

About the Course

NZ Certificate in Boat Building (Level 4) – with strands in Alloy, Composite, Steel and Wood

New Zealand’s world-class marine industry relies on skilled boatbuilders to design, build and maintain everything from racing yachts and superyachts to commercial and recreational vessels. As a boatbuilder, you’ll combine traditional craftsmanship with modern technology – working hands-on with a range of materials, tools and techniques to create boats that are strong, safe and beautifully built.

There are four main pathways in boatbuilding training, each offering a unique direction for your career. Composite boatbuilding focuses on advanced materials like fibreglass, carbon fibre, and resins to build lightweight, high-performance boats – perfect if you’re interested in innovation and design. Alloy boatbuilding uses marine-grade aluminium to create fast, durable, and corrosion-resistant vessels such as fishing boats, trailer boats, and custom launches. Steel boatbuilding involves constructing large, robust vessels like ferries, barges, and pilot boats, while wooden boatbuilding blends traditional craftsmanship with modern techniques to create or restore classic timber vessels.

No matter which pathway you choose, you’ll gain a strong foundation in the core skills of the trade – reading and interpreting plans, measuring and cutting materials with precision, and assembling complex structures. You’ll also develop expertise in marine fabrication, joinery and finishing, along with an understanding of vessel design, safety standards and quality control.

As a work-based apprenticeship, you can earn while you learn. You'll need to be employed in the industry to train on the job as you work toward your trade qualification, and MAST Academy supports you throughout with a dedicated Training Advisor. Not sure where to start? MAST can help with career pathway advice, pre-trade training, or our Launch it – School to Work programme.
