Graduates of the New Zealand Diploma in Engineering (NZDE) can enter this degree with only an additional 1.5 years of study. From there, you may progress to pursue further qualifications, such as graduate diplomas, or continue into postgraduate study in engineering and related fields.

The degree also provides clear pathways to further study, including four-year engineering degrees, graduate diplomas, and postgraduate qualifications.
Entry requirements
Domestic
University Entrance - NCEA Level 3 including
- Three subjects at level 3 including:
- Physics with a minimum of 14 credits
- Calculus with a minimum of 14 credits, and
- one other subject with a minimum of 14 credits from the list of approved subjects* and
- Literacy - 10 credits at Level 2 or above, made up of 5 credits in reading, 5 credits in writing and
- Numeracy - 10 credits at Level 1 or above (specified achievement standards, or unit standards 26623, 26626, 26627).

Equivalent academic qualifications which may include University Bursary with 45% or more in both Physics and Calculus or Algebra; equivalent Cambridge score, equivalent International Baccalaureate
International
International and EAL (English as an additional language) students must meet the minimum academic entry requirements and have achieved an overall band score (Academic) of 6.0 IELTS, (writing and speaking score no less than 6.0 and reading and listening bands no less than 5.5) or equivalent.

Special entry
A school leaver or an adult applicant with equivalent experience, who does not meet all of the entry criteria, may be given provisional entry at the discretion of the Head of School where it is considered that the student has a reasonable chance of succeeding in the qualification. Decisions must comply with each Metro ITP's QMS.
Recognition of Prior Learning
RPL is available for all courses in this programme and must follow each Metro ITP's QMS.
Advanced straddling
Applicants with relevant qualifications or experience may enter directly into Year 2 or Year 3, subject to meeting the graduate profile and programme outcome criteria.
