Enter the world of professional writing
Pull together the techniques you’ve learned and concentrate on one genre, creating a major work of original composition, whether it’s a novel, play, or short story collection. Guided by an industry mentor in your chosen field, you’ll be ready to enter the world of professional writing.
The Applied Writing Programme at NorthTec offers 3 qualifications over 3 years:
- After one year of study: NZ Diploma in Writing for Creative Industries (Level 5)
- After two years of study: NZ Diploma in Creative Writing (Level 6)
- After three years of study: Diploma in Advanced Applied Writing (Level 7)
Our programmes are ideal for people who wish to work independently as writers, for those already working in the creative industries who wish to enhance/upgrade their skills, and for those working in other industries who wish to improve their writing skills to allow higher-level employment.
What you will learn
With this programme, you will learn to integrate the skills and understanding of one genre into a major work of original composition. You’ll be able to complete a major work of original text (novel, play, short story collection etc.) guided by an industry mentor in your chosen field.
In this programme you will learn to:
- Complete a major work of original text
- Prepare annotated book reviews
- Reflect on your own writing process
- Facilitate a workshop
Entry requirements
Computer literacy is an entry requirement for this online programme.
In addition:
- Applicants must have completed the Diploma in Applied Writing (Level 6) or equivalent diploma or appropriate degree OR
- Applicants must provide evidence of an appropriate level of writing experience.
Applicants for whom English is not their first language require a minimum IELTS score of 6 with no band lower than 5.5, or NZCEL Level 4 (Academic).
