Screenprinting Night Class

We deal with printed images every day. Anything that is made in a reproducible format is a print: photocopies, posters, photographs, band T-shirts etc.

Fine art print has been traditionally defined through the technical processes of relief, intaglio, lithography and screen printing. The line between print art and other printed forms has been blurred as artists re-examine the traits that define print practice, with the proliferation of digital processes playing a major part.

This class teaches a process-based approach to making prints, covering the technical aspects of screenprinting, and looking at how the process informs the strategy of making art; at how the medium or the technique exists as the means to realise an idea. 

These classes are suitable for beginners through to experienced artists who want to focus on the particular technique of screen printing.

2025 intakes

We offer this course on a Tuesday evening over eight weeks (6pm-8pm).

We offer one intake per term:

It is only possible to enrol for one term at a time. There will be no classes on public holidays. 

Enrolments for the following term will open on the second week of the current term, on Wednesday at approximately midday, i.e. approximately 8 weeks before the start date of the  following term.  

What if I want to attend the same course next term?

If you want to repeat this course, you will need to apply and pay for each term separately, via our Eventbrite platform (by clicking the link above).  

Course fees

$250 per term

Learners under 16

• We welcome learners under 16 but they do need parental consent to take this night class.
• If you are a learner under 16, please do the following:
  • ask your parent or guardian if it's okay for you to do this night class
  • apply online and tick the box during the application process that says that you are under 16
  • ask your parent or guardian to send an email to [email protected] (Art Night Class Administration) letting us know that they're happy for you to take the night class.

Materials

You will need to bring; artwork and ideas for printing, (screen printing can be used for printing on both paper and fabric), pencils, sharpie, vivid, craft knife, masking tape, apron t-shirts, fabric, wet strength cartridge paper, textile screen printing inks or acrylic paint and a screen-print medium.  

Class fee includes basic workshop materials such as rags, newsprint, solvent, photo emulsion and screen cleaner, class equipment such as rollers, palette knives and squeegees, and the use of printing presses and screenprint tables.

Materials you will need to buy include print paper and some inks. A limited amount of these can be ordered or purchased from the teacher during class time - cash only. Please note photo emulsion for your first photo stencil screen is included in your fee; however, screens incur a cost of $5 to $10 depending on screen size.

Health and safety gear: Apron, gloves (thin disposable ones are useful for inking up, and ordinary kitchen sink gloves are useful for cleaning surfaces/screens etc), closed/covered toe shoes.

Good suppliers for printmaking gear: 

• Fine Art Papers, Christchurch, for Fabriano and Tiepolo heavyweight print papers
• Gordon Harris
• Joe at Homeprint www.homeprint.co.nz (Yoshiharu carving tools, Akua inks etc)
• Office Max (for white/trans and black oil-based inks. The print lab has a supply of other oil-based colours you are welcome to use)
• CCG Industries (screenprint inks in large quantities – smaller quantities can be purchased through school or you can substitute screen print ink for acrylic paint which you add a screen-printing paste/ acrylic screen printing medium which retards the drying of acrylic paint on the screen and reduces the risk of screen blocking).

Petty cash for items you may buy from art school/photocopying costs etc. 

Depending on what the tutor sets as the programme there may be other requirements – you will find out more on your first day!

Tutors

This class will be taught by local artist Amy Dougherty. Amy is currently finishing her Honours year in at the Dunedin School of Art specialising in in printmaking, drawing and exploring more sustainable ways of artmaking.

Directions

Classes are held in the Print Studio at the Dunedin School of Art. Go through the main entrance of the Dunedin School of Art at 19 Riego St (off the Anzac Avenue end of Albany St) and to the far end of the car park. The Print Studio is in the building to your right.

Refund information

For our enrolments you may be issued a full (except for Eventbrite fees) automatic refund up to 7 days before your event starts by requesting a refund through Eventbrite.

Refund requests after this date can be made by contacting [email protected] (Art Night Class Administration). These will be accepted on a case-by-case basis when exceptional circumstances are present. No refunds will be accepted after the start date of the class.

Please note, classes are offered on the basis that enrolment is for the full course.
