Sculpture Night Class - Ceramics

This is a great opportunity to develop your skills and confidence in transforming clay into a figurative, representational or abstract form.

2025 intakes

This class is offered on a Wednesday evening over eight weeks (6pm-8pm).

We offer one intake per term:

Term four	8 September - 31 October(Labour Day – Monday 27 October)

It is only possible to enrol for one term at a time. There will be no classes on public holidays. 

Enrolments for the following term will open on the second week of the current term, on Wednesday at approximately midday, i.e. approximately 8 weeks before the start date of the  following term.

What if I want to attend the same course next term?

If you want to repeat this course, you will need to apply and pay for each term separately, via our Eventbrite platform (by clicking the link above).  

Course fees

$250 per term 

Please note: Student loans are not available for short courses and night classes.

Learners under 16

• We welcome learners under 16 but they do need parental consent to take this night class.
• If you are a learner under 16, please do the following:
  • ask your parent or guardian if it's okay for you to do this night class
  • apply online and tick the box during the application process that says that you are under 16
  • ask your parent or guardian to send an email to [email protected] (Art Night Class Administration) letting us know that they're happy for you to take the night class.

You will study

This is an eight-week course.

Week 1: Design and problem-solve a piece of work. Make a marquette of your proposed sculpture. 

Week 2: Look at different clays and surfaces appropriate for making your work including grogged clay and paper clay options, as well as glaze and non-traditional surface treatments. 

Week 3-6: Making forms. 

Weeks 7-8: Completing work, bisque firing and finishing of surface treatments. 

Studio

The ceramic sculpture studio is a warm, safe and sociable working area. Tools are provided but if you have any of your own clay tools, please bring them along. It is recommended that you wear old clothes, overalls or an apron, plus covered footwear.

Tutor

Classes will be presented by Bronwyn Mohring.

Bronwyn Mohring graduated from Christchurch Polytechnic with a Diploma in Craft Design in 1994 and with a Diploma of Ceramic Design from Otago Polytechnic in 1995. She has worked in the sculptural pottery field ever since. In 2019 Bronwyn return to the Dunedin School of Art to refresh her skills and face new challenges while working towards her Master of Fine Arts.

Materials

Please bring $45 cash with you to the first class - $15 for glaze and for clay (cheapest bag). 

Extra glaze materials are available for sale for larger works or to make up special glazes. However, in most cases the $15 fee will cover this.

Tools are provided but if you have any clay tools you may bring them along. 

Both clay purchases and the glaze fee need to be paid to the tutor by cash or cheque. There is no eftpos.

Directions

Classes are held in the Ceramic Studio at the Dunedin School of Art.

Go to the main entrance of the Dunedin School of Art at 19 Riego St (off the Anzac Avenue end of Albany Street). The Ceramics Workshop is the concrete block building at the far end of the car park towards the stadium.

Refund information

For our enrolments you may be issued a full (except for Eventbrite fees) automatic refund up to 7 days before your event starts by requesting a refund through Eventbrite.

Refund requests after this date can be made by contacting [email protected] (Art Night Class Administration). These will be accepted on a case-by-case basis when exceptional circumstances are present. No refunds will be accepted after the start date of the class.

Please note, classes are offered on the basis that enrolment is for the full course.
