Sculpture Night Class - Ceramics

Want to learn how to build forms and figures in clay? This night class will introduce you to the hand-building techniques of pinching, coiling and slab building. The workshop is ideal for those with no previous clay experience but also for those who have some experience with clay.

About the course

This is a great opportunity to develop your skills and confidence in transforming clay into a figurative, representational or abstract form.

2026 intakes

This class is offered on a Wednesday evening over eight weeks (6pm-8pm).

We offer one intake per term:

• Term one: 9 February - 3 April (Otago Anniversary Day - Monday 23 March)

• Term two: 4 May – 26 June (King's Birthday - Monday 1 June)

• Term three: 20 July – 10 September

• Term four: 14 September - 6 November (Labour Day – Monday 26 October) It is only possible to enrol for one term at a time.

There will be no classes on public holidays.

Enrolments for the following term will open on the second week of the current term, on Wednesday at approximately midday, i.e. approximately 8 weeks before the start date of the following term.

What if I want to attend the same course next term?

If you want to repeat this course, you will need to apply and pay for each term separately, via our Eventbrite platform (by clicking the link above).

Course fees

$250 per term

Please note: Student loans are not available for short courses and night classes.

Learners under 16

We welcome learners under 16 but they do need parental consent to take this night class.

If you are a learner under 16, please do the following: ask your parent or guardian if it's okay for you to do this night class apply online and tick the box during the application process that says that you are under 16 ask your parent or guardian to send an email to [email protected] (Art Night Class Administration) letting us know that they're happy for you to take the night class.

You will study

• This is an eight-week course focused on hand building sculptural forms in clay. Week 1-3: Learning hand building techniques to be used as building blocks for each students personal projects.. Week 4: Becoming comfortable with glazing techniques. Week 4-7: Making forms.
• Completing individual projects and dividing time between making and glazing. Weeks 8: Exploring alternative firing such as raku or tin foil wrapped sagger. NOTE: This plan is a guide only and is adjusted for each classes needs.
• Returning students are encouraged to explore their own creative projects with help in problem solving and practical guidance. Studio
• The ceramic sculpture studio is a warm, safe and sociable working area.
• Tools are provided but if you have any of your own clay tools, please bring them along.
• It is recommended that you wear old clothes, overalls or an apron, plus covered footwear.

Tutor

Classes will be presented by Bronwyn Gayle.

Bronwyn Mohring graduated from Christchurch Polytechnic with a Diploma in Craft Design in 1994 and with a Diploma of Ceramic Design from Otago Polytechnic in 1995.

She has worked in the sculptural pottery field ever since.

In 2019 Bronwyn returned to the Dunedin School of Art to refresh her skills and completed her Master of Fine Arts.

Materials

Please bring $30 cash with you for to the first class to purchase clay.

If students find themselves glazing consistently an extra glaze cost of $15 fee will be asked for to cover this.

Tools are provided but if you have any clay tools you may bring them along.

Both clay purchases and the glaze fee need to be paid to the tutor by cash or cheque.

There is no eftpos.

Directions

Classes are held in the Ceramic Studio at the Dunedin School of Art.

Go to the main entrance of the Dunedin School of Art at 19 Riego St (off the Anzac Avenue end of Albany Street).

The Ceramics Workshop is the concrete block building at the far end of the car park towards the stadium.

Refund information

For our enrolments you may be issued a full (except for Eventbrite fees) automatic refund up to 7 days before your event starts by requesting a refund through Eventbrite.

Refund requests after this date can be made by contacting [email protected] (Art Night Class Administration).

These will be accepted on a case-by-case basis when exceptional circumstances are present.

No refunds will be accepted after the start date of the class.

Please note, classes are offered on the basis that enrolment is for the full course.
