Introduction to Jewellery Night Class

This class is for those who are new to jewellery making.

The focus will be on basic metalworking skills through to the construction of jewellery such as rings and bangles.

You will learn how to cut and form metal, how to safely use a soldering torch, how to emboss designs into metal using a rolling mill, and how to use tools to texture metal, among other things. Silver is the main metal used but it is possible to use any metal you wish. Please bring $25 cash on the first night to receive a starter kit.

Tutors for these sessions will be Michaela Woolf (Monday evening) and Rose Pickernell (Thursday evening).

2025 intakes

This course is offered in the following way on Mondays or Thursdays, 6.00-8.00pm.

• Mondays: one class per week for seven weeks (term 1, 2 and 4) or eight weeks (term 3)
• Thursdays: one class per week for eight weeks (all terms).

We offer one intake per term:

It is only possible to enrol for one term at a time. There will be no classes on public holidays. 

Enrolments for the following term will open on the second week of the current term, on Wednesday at approximately midday, i.e. approximately 8 weeks before the start date of the  following term.

What if I want to attend the same course next term?

If you want to repeat this course, you will need to apply and pay for each term separately, via our Eventbrite platform (by clicking the link above).

We use the Eventbrite platform for our night class online applications.

Course fees

• Mondays (term 1, 2 and 4): $220 per term
• Mondays (term 3): $250 per term
• Thursdays (all terms): $250 per term

Please note: Student loans are not available for short courses and night classes.

Materials

Costs for materials will vary depending on the choice of jewellery materials.

Expect to spend about $20-30 on consumables such as sawblades and solder. Some silver and base metals are available for purchase from the studio. Found objects and materials can be used for many projects and are a great starting point.

Directions to the Jewellery Studio

Classes are held in the Jewellery Studio at the Dunedin School of Art, which is well equipped and provides a safe and sociable working environment. To find it, enter through the main entrance of the Dunedin School of Art at 19 Riego St (off the Anzac Avenue end of Albany St). The Jewellery Studio is on the ground floor, opposite the main entrance.

Refund information

For our enrolments you may be issued a full (except for Eventbrite fees) automatic refund up to 7 days before your event starts by requesting a refund through Eventbrite.

Refund requests after this date can be made by contacting [email protected] (Art Night Class Administration). These will be accepted on a case-by-case basis when exceptional circumstances are present. No refunds will be accepted after the start date of the class.

Please note, classes are offered on the basis that enrolment is for the full course.

Learners under 16

• We welcome learners under 16 but they do need parental consent to take this night class.
• If you are a learner under 16, please do the following:
  • ask your parent or guardian if it's okay for you to do this night class
  • apply online and tick the box during the application process that says that you are under 16
  • ask your parent or guardian to send an email to [email protected] (Art Night Class Administration) letting us know that they're happy for you to take the night class.
