About the course
The programme focuses on environmental issues and the human impact on ecosystems. You will learn practical skills in data collection, surveying and sampling methods, restoration and conservation. This one-year full-time (or equivalent part-time) qualification is made up of eight courses worth 15 credits each.
The diploma is the equivalent of the 1st Year of a Bachelor of Applied Science. In the near future, WITT aims to introduce the Level 6 Diploma in Environmental Management in 2025, after which WITT has arrangements for those students who want to continue study for an environmental science degree.

You will learn how to:
- Describe global environmental issues (with a focus on New Zealand) to determine their impacts on societies and ecosystems, and basic mitigation measures.
- Use data collection and surveying methods to monitor environmental ecological or asset management.
- Apply knowledge of New Zealand terrestrial biology and ecology systems to enable organism monitoring in a field environment.
- Identify and describe the principal vegetation types and their constituent species in New Zealand ecosystems.
Entry Requirements
- New Zealand Certificate in Conservation (Operations) (Level 4)
- NCEA Level 3
- Equivalent knowledge, skills experience or study
Career or further study options
This qualification will prepare you for a career in conservation, resource management, environmental research and monitoring and/or pest control.

Closer to the programme starting, learners will receive a list of course materials to purchase. Examples of course materials could include textbooks, stationary, printing; uniforms, personal protective equipment, tools and a laptop.
