Prehospital Cardiology online short course

About the course

The prehospital cardiology short course is 100% online and run by a team of approved and accredited health professionals from AUT's paramedicine department.

This course includes over 20 engaging multimedia presentations, each lasting up to 40 minutes. After each module, you'll complete a multiple-choice quiz to solidify your understanding and reinforce your learning.

What you’ll study

Topics covered include:

  1. Cardiovascular anatomy and physiology
    A three-part revision of anatomy and physiology, cardiac muscle and cardiac haemodynamics.
  2. 3 Lead ECG Interpretation module
    An 8-part module covering wave formation, rhythm recognition and the 5-step method of 3 lead ECG interpretation.
  3. 12 lead ECG Interpretation module
    An 8-part module covering the history, layout and advantages of the 12 lead ECG and a 6 step method of interpretation that includes recognition of bundle branch blocks, hypertrophy, cardiac axis and ischaemia, injury and infarct.
  4. Acute Coronary Syndrome, STEMIs and STEMI mimics
    A 3-part, in-depth covering of these topics to increase your 12 lead ECG interpretation skills.
  5. Dysrhythmias
    This module looks at the pathology, consequences and long and short-term management of common brady and tachy dysrhythmias.
  6. Cardiac conditions
    An introduction to congenital abnormalities, heart failure, electrolyte imbalances and digoxin toxicity are included in this module.  We also include a comprehensive course to help you learn heart sounds and recognise murmurs.

How long this course will take

The course should take you approximately 16 weeks to complete, but we offer you the flexibility to take up to 6 months.

This course has been designed with working health professionals in mind, so it has flexible learning options with the entire course offered online. This course is designed for those new to ECG interpretation but also serves as a great refresher and extends into all aspects of cardiology.
