New Zealand Diploma in Agribusiness Management
NZQF Level 5

About the course

Grow your career with this diploma that is designed to equip you with vital agribusiness management skills for positions in the agriculture, horticulture, viticulture and other rural servicing and primary industries.

The agribusiness management skills you’ll acquire include financial management, resource management, human resources and business planning.

This 2 ½ year diploma covers all aspects of agribusiness in a part-time programme. Two courses per year are delivered, one each semester, one afternoon session per week. You’ll use your work-place property as a case study for your assessments.

EIT has teamed up with Primary Industry Training Organisation to deliver the New Zealand Diploma in Agribusiness L5. As a student you will receive specific training from EIT’s lectures that will provide you with the knowledge and skill to progress your career and/or business.  Additional support is provided at your workplace through the Primary ITO Training Adviser, who will work with you to help reach your goals.

  • Agriculture/Horticultural Contractor.
  • Nursery Manager/Foreman.
  • Foreman or Manager in the Wool Industry.
  • Livestock Agent.
  • Garden Centre Manager/Supervisor.
  • Horticultural Merchandiser.
  • Orchard or Vineyard Manager/Supervisor.
  • Secondary or Tertiary teacher in Agriculture/Horticulture/Viticulture.
  • Field representative (stock firm, seed, fertiliser).

The purpose of this qualification is to provide the agribusiness sector with individuals who have the knowledge and skills to manage a wide range of agribusiness operations.

Learners will benefit by having a qualification which recognises agribusiness management skills and knowledge to successfully manage the wide range of agribusinesses, or who have some industry or other relevant experience and are ready to advance into a management position within an agribusiness.

Graduates of the qualification will be able to:

  • Compile and integrate whole business information about an agribusiness to critically analyse performance and identify opportunities for improvement.
  • Manage the financial requirements of an agribusiness.
  • Manage staffing requirements in an agribusiness.
  • Manage natural and/or physical resources for agribusiness sustainability

Entry requirements

Applicants are required to have the following

  • NCEA L2, OR
  • Successful completion of a certificate Level 3 or above, preferably in the Primary Industries subject area, OR

For applicants 20 years or older without any of the above academic criteria, evidence of relevant knowledge and experience, and the ability to undertake tertiary study at Diploma level is required. In this case the applicant will be required to participate in an enrolment interview with the purpose of verifying the evidence.

Must have access to financial and production performance information about a specific agribusiness.

In exceptional circumstances an applicant who does not meet the academic entry requirements may be granted entry to the NZ Diploma in Agribusiness Management (Level 5) where they supply evidence to satisfy the Programme Coordinator of their ability to succeed on the NZ Diploma in Agribusiness Management programme.

ENGLISH LANGUAGE ENTRY REQUIREMENT

If English is not your first language you are required to have attained an acceptable level of English language fluency prior to acceptance in the programme. This may be demonstrated in a variety of ways including successful study of a programme in which English was the language of instruction (conditions apply); completion of the New Zealand Certificate in English Language (NZCEL) Level 4 with the Academic endorsement; approved scores on IELTS of 5.5 with no band score lower than 5; or completion of accepted international equivalents.

ENTRY WITH CREDIT

You may already have some knowledge or skills that can be recognised as part of your intended study. This may take a number of different forms including study at a private training establishment, workplace training, other tertiary study, life experiences or voluntary work. If you think you may qualify, you may want to apply for Recognition of Prior Learning.

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) is based on the assessment of your current knowledge and skills. You would apply for RPL if you had gained the relevant knowledge and skills through life experiences and informal learning situations.

You will be asked to provide details of anything that you would like considered as credit toward your intended programme of study, as part of your application.

Applications for RPL for a course should be made prior to enrolment in that course and no later than two weeks after the start of the course.
