The Postgraduate Diploma in Commerce (PGDipCom) is a flexible qualification that gives you the tools for success—whether in your career or for further study.

With the PGDipCom, you’re not required to take any research courses and you can choose not to specialise in one subject. This gives you more freedom to explore topics that you may not have covered in your undergraduate study. Whether you’re looking to fill gaps in your knowledge or upskill in a particular area, the PGDipCom will improve your employability and deepen your business knowledge.

Scholarships for international students

We are currently offering a NZ$10,000 VUW Postgraduate International Scholarship to all eligible international students enrolling in a Master’s degree or Postgraduate Diploma programme. Your scholarship will be processed automatically when your programme application is accepted, and the amount will be deducted from your tuition fees.

Comparing with BCom(Hons)

The PGDipCom is comparable to the BCom(Hons), with a couple of differences. Unlike the BCom(Hons), the PGDipCom doesn’t have a research requirement or a subject requirement. With the PGDipCom, you therefore have more freedom to customise your programme of study.

The PGDipCom is a good option for those who already have work experience. If you graduated recently and don’t have much work experience or a taught Master’s degree, the Bachelor of Commerce with Honours or Master of Commerce may be more suitable for you.

Staircasing options

While the PGDipCom is a useful qualification in its own right, it can also serve as the stepping stone to further study. Some of the courses that you complete on this programme may be counted towards the full Master of Commerce degree, if you choose that study path.

Workload

For the PGDipCom, you’ll study eight courses, usually full time over two trimesters. You can expect a workload of 40 to 45 hours a week.

Part-time students doing two courses per trimester will need to do around 20 to 23 hours of work a week. Make sure you take this into account if you are working while studying.

Special facilities

Postgraduate students can take advantage of the dedicated postgraduate study room at the Wellington School of Business and Government. You can access these facilities from 7 am to midnight.

Here you’ll find computing and printing facilities, and you’ll have access to specialist software such as Gauss, Matlab, Mathematica, Maple, R, Shazam, and Stata.
