About the course
The HYBIRD programme is unique to Kalandra.
It allows the student to undertake the theory of a New Zealand qualification while remaining in their home country (anywhere in the world). The student will then come into New Zealand on a visitor visa, undertake 10 weeks of an unpaid internship at an appropriate facility.
There are two programme / strand options: Dementia Care and Palliative (end of life) Care.
Why this programme?
- Continue to earn or study while you learn. Complete over 2/3rds of the programme while working/studying and living in your home country.
- NZQA approved - Level 4 on the New Zealand Qualifications Framework.
- 10 weeks of an unpaid internship arranged by Kalandra in front of potential employers and in the healthcare industry.
- Working as a Level 4 healthcare assistant in New Zealand may lead to permanent residence (as per current immigration settings - June 2024).
The programme:
Part A: Theory (37 weeks) - $7500
- Undertaken in current location (country of origin)
- Online and supported by a dedicated lecturer
- Students can continue to work/study while they learn
- 37 weeks
- 25 hours learning per week
Students MUST achieve Part A to gain entry to Part B
Part B: Practicum (11 weeks) - $10,000
- Undertaken in New Zealand
- Week 1 is face to face with Kalandra lecturers on campus learning new skills and equipment
- 10 weeks of arranged placement / unpaid internship at an appropriate facility
- Placement can be at various locations around New Zealand
Pathways:
Graduates can be employed in roles such as:
- Healthcare Assistant – Aged Care and/or Dementia Care Unit OR Hospice (palliative care strand)
- Healthcare Assistant - Primary and Acute Care, Therapeutic Programme Care
- Medical Practice Assistant
- Homecare Support Worker / Caregiver
Education Pathways:
This qualification may lead on to the New Zealand Certificate in Public Health and Health Promotion (Level 5), New Zealand Diploma in Addiction Studies (Applied) (Level 6) or bachelor’s degrees in related health and wellbeing subject areas.

Who are we: Kalandra Education Group is a Private Training Organisation based in Auckland, New Zealand. Kalandra specialise in courses related to care of the vulnerable person.
Kalandra was founded by Dr Christine Clark. Christine's mother and father were in aged care during the final years of their life and, although the care provided was exceptional, Christine identified gaps in that care. She created Kalandra alongside her two daughters, to address these gaps.
Kalandra have a number of courses ranging from Level 3 - Level 5 addressing the needs of the vulnerable person including; dementia care, mental health support, diversional therapy, community care, physical and intellectual disability and much more.
Although our campus is in Auckland, New Zealand we have staff and students around New Zealand and, around the world.
