New Zealand Certificate in Rigging
NZQF Level 3

About the course

Learn how to prepare and complete rigging under limited supervision.  As a Rigger you will learn how to safely set up and control the movement of loads, usually suspended, over distance, and operate a variety of hoisting devices and rigging equipment.  You will often be required to operate at heights.

What you will learn:

You will learn how to:

  • Prepare, inspect and use rigging equipment and tools; and use common knots in rigging, and report equipment faults, when setting up and controlling the movement of loads
  • Apply knowledge of risk management, slinging calculations, and industry recognised communication methods to direct and guide crane movements in relation to loads and equipment.
  • Lift and place loads as part of a rigging team.
  • Use elevated work platforms (EWPs) and report faults and damage of EWPs.
  • Take instructions and communicate within a team when setting-up and controlling the movement of loads; and complete basic workplace documentation.
  • Maintain person safety while working at heights, including the set up and use of fall arrest systems in accordance with health and safety legislation and the best practice guidelines for rigging systems.


Entry Requirements:

You must be employed and working in an environment where you can engage in rigging work.

You must hold a current comprehensive workplace first aid certificate.


Career Options: 

Work as a Rigger on a variety of sites where rigging is required to set up and control the movement of loads.
You can increase your employment prospects by gaining further experience in specialised areas including telecommunication rigging, construction rigging, industrial rigging, working with cranes and industrial rope access.
