About the course

The NZ Certificate in Rigging (Level 3) provides New Zealand industry with people who can prepare and complete rigging work under limited supervision.

Riggers work to safely set up and control movement of loads over distance, which are usually suspended. Riggers can operate a variety of hoisting devices and rigging equipment. Riggers are often required to work at heights.

This programme includes a challenge assessment aligned to the Certificate of Competence required by industry and this qualification.


Graduates of this programme will be able to:

  • Prepare, inspect, and use rigging equipment and tools; and use common knots in rigging, and report equipment faults, when setting-up and controlling, movement of loads.
  • Apply knowledge of risk management, slinging calculations, and industry recognised communication methods to direct and guide crane movements in relation to loads and equipment.
  • Lift and place loads as part of a rigging team.
  • Use elevated work platforms (EWPs) and report faults and damage of EWPs.
  • Act on instructions, communicate within a team when setting up and controlling the movement of loads, and complete basic documentation.
  • Maintain personal safety while working at heights, including the set up and use of fall arrest systems in accordance with health and safety legislation and the best practice guidelines for rigging systems.

Entry requirements

  • Be over 16 years of age.
  • Hold a current comprehensive first aid certificate before enrolment (unit standards 6400, 6401, & 6402).
  • Be in employment and engaging with work related to the scope of the programme. The employer and trainee, in conjunction with Vertical Horizonz, must complete a training agreement.
  • Trainees need to have a nominated supervisor to observe and verify trainee competencies.
  • Be physically fit and able to demonstrate physical competency for the skills being trained.
