About the course

In this one-year course, you will gain the foundations to progress to an apprenticeship as an electrician.

Our team of tutors are supportive industry experts who guide you in developing your understanding of electrical theory and building your hands-on skills. You will learn how to perform basic electrical tasks, install cables and equipment, apply safe working procedures and practices, and operate within the legal limitations of electrical and relevant non-electrical legislation.

Our graduates work across a range of exciting jobs and industries in the electrical industry.

Entry requirements

You can apply for this programme if you meet the below admission requirements.

General admission You are at least 16 years of age on the programme start date for the semester (or provide a completed Early Release Exemption form), and meet one of the following requirements:

  • Achieved NCEA Level 1 with Mathematics and English subjects;
  • or equivalent knowledge and skills.

Special admission To apply for special admission, you must have:

  1. Passed the age of 20 years on or before the first day of the semester in which study for the programme is to commence; and
  2. provided sufficient evidence of aptitude or appropriate work or other life experience that would indicate a successful outcome in the qualification. Discretionary admission If you do not meet any of the above options, and you think you have what it takes to complete this programme, you can apply for discretionary admission. Your application may be accepted if you can demonstrate a good chance of success. Approval of discretionary entrance applications will be at the discretion of the Relevant Academic Authority.

English language admission requirements International applicants must provide evidence that they have the necessary English language proficiency required for the programme using an equivalent.
