About the course
If you are already working or volunteering in the care and education of young children at home or centre-based, and want to gain a recognised qualification, then this new programme will give you the flexibility to work while you study towards a fulfilling career in early childhood education.
Enjoy 10 hours of learning per week in either an online self-paced learning environment, or our face-to-face online learning approach by friendly industry experienced tutors who can support those involved in a registered home-based childcare provider.
You'll learn child development, observation, learning and play while putting your skills directly into practice to deliver quality learning for our tamariki, and develop communication skills to build relationships with children, parents, family and colleagues.
This programme also provides a pathway into our Diploma in Early Childhood Level 5 programme.
Graduates can work as:
- a nanny or au-pair
- an educator in home based, centre-based and hospital-based services
- as an ECE play-group coordinator
Entry requirements
- Domestic students need to be 17 years of age or older at the time the programme commences.
- Must be a New Zealand Citizen or Permanent Resident.
- Be reliable, responsible and in good health.
- Hold a New Zealand Certificate in Early Childhood Education (Level 3) or NCEA Level 2, or equivalent.
- Or for those with relevant ECE work experience, a referee who knows the applicant in a professional capacity to provide a confidential referee report in support of the application. Applications will be considered on a case by case basis. Students enrolling in the home-based service stream, must be employed in a licenced Home-based ECE service to be eligible.
- Meet the minimum requirements of the NZMA Entry Assessment.
- Have an acceptable safety check (New Zealand Police Vet) prior to beginning of practical experience; home-based must be employed in a licenced Home-based ECE service, produce reference and attestation letter which includes current police vetting information from HB employer. If the programme begins before the Vet report has been received from the New Zealand Police, students may begin the programme but may not attend any practical experience at an ECE Service Provider until an acceptable report has been received.
- If English is not your first language, an IELTS of Level 5.5 (General or Academic) with no sub-score less than 5, or equivalent is required
International Students
- International students need to be 18 years of age or older.
- International students must have travel and medical insurance and a valid visa.
