About the course
New Zealand Certificate in Plumbing, Gasfitting and Drainlaying (Level 3)
Get the knowledge and hands-on skills you need to take on an apprenticeship in the industry. You’ll develop basic skills in residential plumbing, gasfitting and drainlaying. As part of the course, you’ll visit plumbing businesses and suppliers of plumbing materials.
You will learn how to:
- Apply good conduct, ethical, and legal practices to work in a plumbing, gasfitting, and drainlaying environment.
- Apply safe working procedures and practices, and identify hazards in a plumbing, gasfitting, and drainlaying working environment.
- Assist with the installation of basic plumbing, gasfitting, and drainlaying systems and components including the following: hot and cold water supply; sanitary plumbing of appliances and fixtures; foul water; drainlaying including associated components; basic sheet metal.
Programme specific information
The purpose of this qualification is to provide the plumbing, gasfitting, and drainlaying industries with people who:
- have basic skills and knowledge in plumbing, gasfitting, and drainlaying
- have an awareness of the requirements of the regulatory environment, and
- are ready to enter an apprenticeship
The New Zealand community will benefit from having graduates who are able to assist in ensuring public safety in the provision of gas, water services, and drainage.
Entry criteria/requirements
Entry to this programme is open, although students must demonstrate a reasonable likelihood of success.
To meet legal and health requirements, candidates must be physically able to carry out the practical components of the programme.
If learners intend to progress to a Plumbing, Drainlaying and/or Gasfitting apprenticeship programme, that after completion of that apprenticeship they will need to register with the Plumbers Gasfitters and Drainlayers Board. The Board will undertake a check with Police to see of the graduate has a criminal record and will then decide whether the graduate is a fit and proper person to be registered. If the graduate has a criminal record this might exclude them from registration.

Career Options
Graduates are not qualified to practice as a plumber, gasfitter or drainlayer. Roles that this qualification may lead to are plumbing apprentice, gasfitting apprentice, or drainlaying apprentice.
Graduates may also be able to work in a related area in the construction industry, such as plumbing, gasfitting or drainlaying wholesaling, or retailing as a counter sales person.
