Develop a basic understanding of tikanga
Tikanga is a set of traditional practices or behaviours unique to specific situations. The idea comes from the Māori word ‘tika’ which means ‘right’ and encompasses the idea of doing what is right for the collective.

Founded on a Māori world view this course will give you an introduction to tikanga and give you the skills and knowledge to participate in tikanga practices. No matter if your interest is personal or professional, this course is the perfect way to start engaging with Māori culture.
This course has a blended learning style incorporating face-to-face and online giving you flexibility to learn around your commitments.
A workbook is supplied to all ākonga to support their learning.
Graduates of this qualification will be able to:
- describe the fundamental application of cultural concepts where tikanga are applied and practiced as an expression of mana ao tūroa;
- apply basic reo structures and tikanga practices as an expression of mana reo;
- apply basic factual knowledge to describe tikanga as they apply to kaitiakitanga in the expression of mana whenua;
- engage and interact with others to carry out basic aspects of ngā tikanga as an expression of mana tangata.
