About the course

Students will learn current industry skills from practising interior designers using the latest industry technologies. From the conceptual stages, through to fully resolved proposals, students will use manual and technical drawing, as well as digital programmes.

The work students do will be for real clients with most projects involving industry or community groups. Work experience is undertaken in the final year which may lead to full-time employment.

Guest speakers regularly provide inspiration and insight to current industry practice, as do on-site industry visits.

Entry requirements

14 credits at NCEA Level 3 in each of 3 subjects or equivalent, or 48 credits at NCEA Level 2 across four subjects (including English and/or Mathematics, Practical Art, Technology or Design) or equivalent, or Successfully completed the Certificate in Media Arts programme, or equivalent

Please submit a portfolio​ with your application. It should reflect your creative ability and inclination, and will be examined for presentation as well as design. You should provide a cohesive package with explanatory text, giving evidence of your attention to detail as well as your passion for interior design. Guidelines​ are available for putting together a portfolio.

Special admission may be granted to candidates aged 20 years or over who do not meet the specified entry requirements. These candidates may be required to demonstrate an ability to successfully complete the programme.

Candidates who have English as a second language are required to have an International English Language Test System (IELTS) score of 6.0, with no individual band score lower than 5.5; or equivalent.
