About the course
This part-time on campus or fully online programme is ideal for those starting out in the wine industry or experienced staff who want to know the technical reasons behind vineyard management decisions. This programme has been completely redeveloped with interactive online activities. It can be completed part-time over one year, following one vineyard production cycle. The Winegrowing industry will benefit by having knowledgeable staff who are able to contribute to more efficient and effective operations. You will benefit by having a qualification within a training pathway that recognises progression through the industry, as well as increased skills and knowledge acquisition to enable improved job performance.
Programme Outline
This qualification is ideal if you have experience working in a vineyard, or are capable of transferring your prior skills and knowledge to the winegrowing industry and want to progress to being able to supervise operations in viticultural production.
You can choose to study on campus or fully online. On campus study entails attending campus four hours per week.
Access to a vineyard is required as all students must complete practical vineyard tasks.
Upon graduating you will be able to:
- Supervise and provide instruction to team members using a range of effective communication and interpersonal skills relevant to the viticulture sector.
- Implement and monitor sustainable winegrowing operations to achieve grape quality specifications.
- Implement and monitor a sustainable wine grape protection programme to achieve grape quality specifications.
- Monitor and assess sustainable winegrowing techniques to achieve desirable wine quality.

Academic Requirements
- NCEA Level 2; or
- A qualification at Level 2 or above; or
- Evidence of relevant knowledge and experience in a vineyard (or interest), literacy and numeracy abilities equivalent to NCEA (Level 1). (In this case the applicant may be required to participate in an enrolment interview with the purpose of verifying the evidence).
Other Requirements
- Be physically able to complete the programme specific outcomes.
English Language Entry Requirements
All applicants must have a level of English sufficient to be able to study at this level. Those applicants whose first language is not English should have:
- NZCEL Level 3 with any endorsement; or
- IELTS 5.5 with no band score lower than 5; or
- Completion of accepted international equivalents
*This course is not available to international students.
