About the course

Develop your career in adult and tertiary teaching management with the New Zealand Diploma in Adult and Tertiary Teaching (Level 6).

This qualification is for education practitioners aspiring to be, or in, a leadership role in adult and tertiary teaching or training. It represents an advanced qualification for a professional adult and tertiary teaching educator and provides a pathway to graduate and post-graduate qualifications.

You will learn to:

  • Design for learning to meet specified learning outcomes in dynamic contexts
  • Promote teaching environments that give primacy to learners
  • Explore and implement facilitation and teaching strategies to meet the needs of diverse learners and contexts
  • Select and implement assessment and consistency management and processes
  • Undertake kaitiakitanga in an adult and tertiary teaching environment
  • Provide leadership and professional support to other practitioners working both within and across programmes
  • Analyse the educational environment and apply knowledge as a basis for influencing own and others’ decision-making, innovation and change 

A number of the ATT Diploma papers have a requirement where the student either needs to be teaching or have had teaching experience. There are no specific hours required but the student will need to reflect on their own practice or use it as a context for; ATT102, 104, 105, 107, 108 & 110

For the papers ATT101 and 103, the principles taught are theoretical and they cover best practice rather than current practice. Students will not need teaching experience or time for these papers. 

ATT100 Theoretical Principles of Adult Learning (6 credits)
This paper undertakes a critical analysis of selected theories and concepts of learning applicable to the adult learning experience, learning styles, motivation in adult education programmes, and workplace learning.

ATT101 Learning design for dynamic contexts (18 credits)
This paper provides learners with the critical knowledge and skills to undertake learning design which is adaptable and responsive to differing contexts and environments.

ATT102 Meeting the needs of diverse learners and contexts (15 credits)
This paper provides learners with the critical knowledge and skills to undertake learning design which is adaptable and responsive to differing contexts and environments.

ATT103 Culturally safe and inclusive adult learning environments in New Zealand (5 credits)
This paper provides learners with an understanding of a values-based educational environment in a New Zealand setting, which incorporates respect for the mana and diverse cultural backgrounds of learners.

ATT104 Manage adult learning events (10 credits)
This paper provides learners with skills and knowledge necessary for the successful planning and organisation of learning events, including reflection of learning event outcomes for future endeavours.

ATT105 Professional practice and leadership in adult learning (10 credits)
This paper provides learners with skills and knowledge necessary to implement effective leadership practices in the management of provision for adult learning opportunities.

ATT106 Leading and supporting other practitioners an adult learning environment (It is recommended that ATT106 be taken after, or in the same intake as, ATT105, but not before ATT105) (10 credits)
This paper provides learners with skills and knowledge necessary to implement effective leadership practices, which are underpinned by kaitiakitanga, in the provision for adult learning opportunities.

ATT107 Promote teaching environments that give primacy to learners (10 credits)
 
This paper provides learners with skills and knowledge necessary to promote adult learning environments which give primacy to the learners.

ATT108 Decision-making, innovation and change in the adult learning environment (10 credits)
This paper enables learners to undertake critical reflection and analysis of own practice with regards to decision-making, innovation and change, evaluating different methodologies for implementation.

ATT109 Quality assurance in assessment of adult learning (15 credits)
This paper provides learners with the knowledge and skills necessary to undertake quality assurance in assessment and to reflect upon effectiveness of quality assurance processes in own practice.

ATT110 Design and evaluation of assessment materials in adult learning (15 credits)
This paper provides learners with the knowledge and skills necessary to design and evaluate adult learning assessment materials in the context of stakeholder and organisational requirements and to implement processes for continuous improvement of assessment materials.
