This qualification is intended for learners who have a basic understanding and ability in the use of te reo Māori. It is also for those who have a desire to contribute positively to the development of te reo kia tika, kia rere, kia Māori, or have a personal and/or professional interest in te reo Māori.
Graduates will have the language skills required to communicate, with little support, in familiar everyday contexts, and in Māori environments where they feel comfortable.

Roles such as: language support in administration of a range of Māori and non-Māori organisations – Radio station, Tourism, Health sector; language support assistant in a Kōhanga Reo; language support assistant in a Māori Radio Station. This qualification provides a pathway for graduates to develop capability and capacity to protect, maintain, and enrich mātauranga taonga tuku iho for whānau, hapū, iwi/community for future and current generations.
I didn’t know what to expect when I enrolled to learn te reo Māori at WITT. I studied te reo 30 years ago at high school and back then all I needed was a pen and a notebook. Today, not only am I learning te reo Māori, I’ve also had to learn how to use a computer and the online learning programme. This has been a blast. I enjoy my classes, the kaiako and the other students; especially hearing which students have the same pepeha as me. The kaiako say that making mistakes is the best way to learn. If that’s the case, then I’m at the top of the class and proud of it.
