Take your engineering career to the next level.

If you are a marine engineer looking to progress your career to a senior engineer or head of a technical department role, this programme is for you.

You will develop the critical thinking skills to solve complicated engineering problems at sea.

When you graduate, you will be ready to take charge of engineering operations and lead a team of engineers onboard the most complex and advanced vessels, technical operations onboard large cruise ships, or managerial shore-based positions.

This qualification leads to a Maritime New Zealand (MNZ) certificate

You need to complete this qualification before applying to Maritime New Zealand (MNZ) for a: 

Take your marine engineering career to the highest level with Marine Engineering Class 1 (MEC 1).

If you continue to study the optional strand  MEC 1 for a further 12 weeks, you will learn the skills and knowledge required to become a chief engineering officer. 

You need to complete this qualification before applying to MNZ for a: 

Award of the MNZ MEC 2 or MEC 1 certificates of competency will also require the completion of: 

  • Sea service
  • Maritime NZ medical
  • Eye test fit and proper check
  • Oral exam
  • Ancillary certificates.

This is an internationally recognised programme, meeting the standards of the IMO (International Maritime Organisation) STCW code (Standard for Training and Certification for Watchkeepers), (regulation STCW A-III/2).
