About the course

Graduates of this qualification will be equipped, under supervision, to act as construction technicians on small and medium scale building projects of limited complexity through all stages from first client contact, research and assistance with preliminary design documentation, working drawing documentation, tender, contract and construction to completion.

Entry requirements

Academic achievement Applicants should demonstrate an ability to succeed in tertiary study, shown by the completion of any of the following qualifications or courses of study: - 35 or more credits at NCEA Level 2, in four subjects which must include a minimum of 8 literacy credits at Level 2 or higher in English; 4 credits must be in reading and 4 credits must be in writing. The literacy credits will be selected from the schedule of NZQA approved achievement standards and unit standards and a minimum of 8 credits from Level 1 numeracy and 8 credits from Level 2 mathematics or - Equivalent NZQF Unit Standards.

English language The programme requires a standard of English language that will enable students to successfully complete the courses. Students who have not studied at secondary or tertiary level where English is the medium of instruction may be admitted to the programme if they can demonstrate evidence of achieving:

  • An IELTS (Academic score of not less than 6.0 (with no sub-test score lower than 5.5).

Life skills/work experience Applicants who do not meet the academic entry criteria above may be admitted to the programme if they are able to demonstrate:

  • Equivalent knowledge and skills; and/or
  • Previous and ongoing life or work experience; and/or
  • Other formal or informal study such as to suggest likelihood of successful programme completion.
