About the course
Graduates will have acquired basic skills and knowledge in understanding the legal, cultural and social factors affecting social service in New Zealand and the roles and responsibilities of social service workers and agencies. Introductory knowledge of service user assessment, advocacy, structural issues and aspects or working with abuse, neglect and violence Understanding of the Treaty of Waitangi and a basic knowledge of Te Reo and Tikanga; Effective written and oral communication skills, study skills and research skills to support further study. Experience in social service work at beginning level of competency under professional and managerial supervision.
Graduates will be eligible to apply for the National Certificate in Social Services (Level 4).
Entry requirements
12 credits at NCEA Level 1 in English or an equivalent qualification or special admission aged 20 or over. Applicants whose first language is not English or Maori must have an IELTS score of 5.0 in all bands. Declaration of any criminal conviction.
