Professional Skills for Primary Industries
This programme will enable you to gain your Class 2 drivers licence. It is the first part of the driving programmes and you can progress to the NZ Certificate in Commercial Road Transport (Heavy Vehicle Operator) (Level 3) where you can complete your Class 4 and 5 drivers licence. EIT | Te Pūkenga has its own commercial vehicles for you to drive and sit your licence.
Your future career and study opportunities
On successful completion of this qualification you can pursue employment as a heavy transport operator.
On successful completion of the NZ Certificate in Primary Industry Operational Skills (with an optional strand in Specialist Equipment with Class 2 Licence) (Level 3) you may choose to continue with your studies by enrolling in the NZ Certificate in Commercial Road Transport (Heavy Vehicle Operator) (Level 3).
Outline
The NZ Certificate in Primary Industry Operational Skills (with an optional strand in Specialist Equipment with Class 2 Licence) aims to provide you with the ability to safely and effectively carry out a range of operational activities which involve vehicles and machinery.
The road transport industry is short of qualified drivers. This programme is well supported by industry and is for those who need to gain a Class 2 licence and who may then want to enrol in the NZ Certificate in Commercial Road Transport (Heavy Vehicle Operator) (Level 3). This programme also includes wheels, tracks and rollers, and forklift endorsement with OSH certificate.
Graduates of this qualification will be able to:
- Identify and assist with the management of workplace risks.
- Plan and carry out operational activities using mechanised equipment with consideration for environmental impacts.
- Manage personal wellbeing when carrying out primary industry operational activities.
Graduates of the Specialist Equipment strand will also be able to:
- Operate specialist equipment for primary industry operational activities.
Entry requirements
Applicants must:
- Have held a New Zealand Class 1 licence for a minimum of 6 months.
- Demonstrate the ability to drive a manual gearbox vehicle.
- Demonstrate the ability to obtain a NZ Transport Agency (NZTA) DL9 medical certificate in no more than 60 days.
Due to NZTA licensing requirements, no international applicants will be enrolled.
Applicants must also have:
- NCEA Level 1, or
- A qualification at Level 1 or above, with evidence of Literacy and Numeracy abilities equivalent to NCEA (Level 1, or
- Evidence of relevant knowledge and experience, including Literacy and Numeracy abilities equivalent to NCEA Level 1.
In the latter two situations you may be required to participate in an enrolment interview with the purpose of verifying the evidence.
