Laser Cutting for Design short course

About the course

Gain an introduction to the latest laser cutting technology and materials.

Enjoy the opportunity to create your own 2D and 3D designed object(s) in a range of materials including wood, cardboard & plastic using Adobe Illustrator software. Learn to convert your designs into digital files suitable for laser cutting.

The CAD design software knowledge learned in this course can be transferred to other technologies. 

Content

At the completion of the course, you will be able to:

  1. Use CAD software (Adobe Illustrator) to create vector files for laser or CNC applications.
  2. Understand the difference between raster and vector files and their applications.     
  3. Create and safely output a designed object that utilises laser cutting technology.     

Indicative content:

  • Introduction to the computer software capable of creating or converting vector files.     
  • Designing basic 2D/3D objects for laser cutting and/or laser etching.
  • Health and safety requirements for laser cutting.     
  • Laser cutting a designed object.

Entry requirements

  • This short course is open to domestic students and international students (who are currently based in New Zealand).
  • Basic computer skills. We use Adobe Illustrator software.
  • Enthusiasm and curiosity around learning new skills.

Materials

Basic materials supplied. Please bring a drawing pad, pens, pencils and a USB stick.
