About the course
Positive role models can make a huge difference to our New Zealand youth as they develop their identity and gain crucial life skills. If you're passionate about working with youth in our communities, mentoring and guiding them to achieve positive goals, this course will give you the skills you need to make a difference in the lives of others. This course is open to anyone based in the mid to upper North Island who is interest in exploring further study and learning in youth work. The flexible and inclusive learning style enables learners to study alongside employment and other commitments. You'll be required to complete 200 hours of practical work experience. You may already be working or volunteering in the youth work space (10-24 years of age), if not we encourage our ākonga (students) to explore options for Youth Work (volunteer or paid work experience) within your community. Our Kaiako (teaching staff) are available to assist with navigating options.

You must be able to meet the standard entry criteria (refer below).
Other Requirements If you have had a criminal conviction at any time in the past you must declare the circumstances in confidence as part of the selection process; All applicants accepted will be required to provide a signed consent form which allows Toi Ohomai to check your record of convictions upon entry, during and prior to completing the degree; You will be accepted only after the police check is processed. All applicants with any convictions will be required to attend an individual interview with a relevant department staff member; and Two character references are required. These should be from persons in positions of trust such as an employer, teacher, pastor, kaumātua or kuia. References from family, friends or work colleagues will not be accepted.
