About the course

Are you working in the building industry and want to get your carpentry trade qualification? This flexible course can be completed alongside your everyday work. We offer the best training with experienced tutors managing your apprenticeship every step of the way.

You’ll need to be currently working and have an employer who is willing to train you as an apprentice. You’ll then enrol with Toi Ohomai as a part-time student.

The practical components of the course are taught on-site by your employer or supervisor. Our on-site tutors cover the whole Bay of Plenty and regularly come to you for assessment using our custom record of work app. You’ll also attend two, week long block courses per year for the first three years and one, week long block course in the fourth year.

If you don’t have employment in the building industry, but are still keen to get a building qualification, have a look at our full-time course New Zealand Certificate in Construction Trade Skills (Level 3).

You’ll be invited to an information meeting. This is your opportunity to find out more about the course content and to make sure you're on the most appropriate course for your career aspirations and current level of experience.

Standard Entry Criteria

Admission, entry, selection, and enrolment into programmes will be in accordance with the Academic Regulations and/or, where approved, specific programme regulations.

For courses at Level 4, domestic students will normally be required to have:

NCEA Level 2 with passes in English/Te Reo Māori or education achievement at least equivalent to NCEA Level 2; OR

Evidence of ability to complete academic and any other programme requirements.

Other Considerations

To be accepted on to this course you must:

  • be working in the construction industry as an employee or contractor
  • be supervised by someone who is prepared to support the training.

Enrolment into this course will also require you, your employer, and Toi Ohomai to enter into a training agreement.

This agreement will outline the responsibilities of each party to the apprenticeship, and will align with the principles in the Code of Good Practice for New Zealand Apprenticeships.

English language requirements

Level 4 certificate IELTS General or Academic score of 5.5 with no band score lower than 5 or completed New Zealand Certificate in English Language Level 3 with an endorsement of either General, Workplace or Academic, or meets a relevant English Proficiency Outcome as outlined by NZQA.
